Some shoots just feel like a deep breath of fresh air. Abi and Mike’s engagement at BeaconField Campsite, Licky was exactly that, a quiet little pocket of magic tucked into the woods, wrapped in the softest light, with bluebells doing their thing and nature showing off a bit (as it should).
The Set-Up: Why Beacon Field?
So, why BeaconField? Well, for Abi, it wasn’t just a pretty place, it was her place. She’s been involved with the Girlguides for years, and this particular corner of Licky Hills holds a bit of her heart. Mike? He’s one of those calm, solid blokes who seems to just get it. The kind of guy who stands quietly, watching his fiancée beam while she talks about bluebells and tents, and then says something that makes her laugh so hard she forgets there's a camera nearby.
It wasn’t a big production. No props, no Pinterest-perfect staging, just the two of them, a forest that felt like a fairytale, and me trying to not trip over tree roots while backing up for the shot.
Among the Bluebells
Honestly, it’s hard to go wrong with a sea of bluebells. If you’ve never seen that place in spring, imagine nature going all-out with lilac confetti. And there, in the middle of it, were Abi and Mike, joking, holding hands, getting slightly lost (intentionally), and forgetting they were being photographed.
What I loved most was how relaxed it all was. No stiff posing, no “tilt your head like this” nonsense, just real moments. Abi had this spark in her eye, the kind that says “I’m about to giggle and I don’t care who sees.” Mike kept looking at her like she was the only person on the planet. It was all very wholesome and a bit heart-melty.
The vibe: real, honest, and a bit dusty
We didn’t need fancy. We had dusty boots, flecks of sunlight, and that look couples get when they’re both excited and a bit shy about what’s coming next. That’s the sweet spot, honestly, the moments between the ones you think matter.
There’s something about these kinds of shoots, just the couple, the trees, and no distractions, that makes people open up. You see the belly laughs, the nose crinkles, the way their fingers naturally reach for each other. That’s what I chase with my camera. Not perfection. Connection.
Want This Kind of Session?
If you're the type of couple who’d rather be in the woods than a studio, who loves a bit of mess and a lot of meaning, this kind of shoot might be your thing. I’m all about catching the real stuff, the quiet glances, the sudden bursts of laughter, the way you look at each other when you forget I’m there.
Thinking about booking your own engagement session? Get in touch and let’s chat about where feels right for you, whether that’s Beacon Field, a windswept hilltop, or your nan’s back garden.
One Last Thing…
Abi and Mike, thank you for the laughs, the bluebell-chasing, and letting me be a third wheel for an hour or so. You’re a cracking pair and I can’t wait for the big day.
